A Story for Thursday: Nana Upstairs Nana Downstairs

I read this story to the children (4 to 6 years old) of a reading programme I volunteer at. The story revolves around topics such as family, death and age. This story is special to me because not many children get to meet their great grandparents now. As a young child, I had the opportunity to meet both my paternal and maternal great grandmothers. Although I cannot recall much about them, do have their pictures to remind me that I have met them before.
As the story was told, I could see that the children were trying to understand the concept of age and growing older. Naturally, they had they also had their questions about death and they were very generous with sharing their own family experiences. It is important to be explicit and clear in explaining about death and old age. Overall, the children were very receptive towards this story. I could literally see their minds opening up wider as they assimilate the topics of the story.

P.S. The book belongs to the reading programme. I do not own the book.
