The Review of Education

This is a react post.

In the recent years, months and even days, many have been voicing out their views on education. Many have been advocating for a review on our education system. I understand how this feels. Personally, I am the same as well. According to all of the knowledge I received from academic/personal research, tertiary and college education, education was created for people to contribute to the economy. Sounds sad ya? It seems like we are viewed as products of a factory, made to function for a purpose set by others. Well that was the primary goal. Now this goal is changing and I believe it has to change soon.

Recently, an 'O' level/secondary four student wrote (or hope to write) to the Minister of Education. I admire her for her courage and time she spent on crafting the letter. I feel that she was eloquent for her age. You can read her letter here. She might amaze you too and I agree with her. She has not just one point, but many relevant points that were brought across. At 16, I was busy with other things in my life. I was not concerned about how I was getting educated and definitely not even close to thinking how I want my kids to be educated by the system. Now this girl has a good amount of foresight for her age.

I would like to recommend all educators, pre-school and formal school teachers to read this letter. I know how jaded, tired, upset, angry and frustrated educators are with the system. This letter might invoke/ignite the purpose and passion that every educator had. Hence, I recommend the read of this letter highly.

A second item that I would like to share in this post is a video. This video was a talk given by Sir Ken Robinson. It is said that he is a world-renowned education and creativity expert. It is almost 12 minutes long. But take note that this video would help you understand the notion of education better. You will find that the video by Sir Ken Robinson and the letter from Janelle Lee to the Education Minister corresponding rather well. Educators who watch this video might be brought back to the theory that they have learned back in teacher-training years. There are a few other points in the video that resonates with me i.e. special needs. I have so much to say on that topic, but I will leave that to another post.
Do watch the video here:

I shall end this post with the letter and video for your perusal. My last words:

“A good read, an eye opener and some foresight to what might be in the future. Educators all around, this concerns you.”
