In my previous post, I explained that I attended the Asian Festival of Children's Content 2011 last month. I bought five books from the Media Mart and this post is regarding the books I bought.
1. Ah Kong's Clock
Written by Belinda Chan
Illustrated by Lynette Long
Price at Media Mart: $8.70
I got hold of this book immediately when I saw it at the Media Mart. I have been in search for this book actually and was overjoyed to have found it. I truly love the local (Singaporean) feel to the story. It was a timeless story which I hope to share to the future generation/s.
2. What Sallamah Didn't Know
Written by Sharon Ismail
Illustrated by Khairudin Saharom
Price at Media Mart: $12.90
The cover page of the book did not look very appealing. However, I was attracted to the title of the story. As I read the book, I found it has another timeless local flavour. Once again, I chose to buy the book as I was aiming for local stories.
3. My Mother's Sari
Written by Sandhya Rao
Illustrated by Nina Sabnani
Price at Media Mart: $12
I read this book before for a reading programme last year. It was during the Deepavali festival period and the book was perfect for the occasion. The story also has a mothers' day/mothers' love feel to it. I also love how the book contains an informative part on wearing the sari. This book is somewhat a 'faction'. Fact and fiction put together. It is not easy to get a hold of this book too. The publishers or distributors set up a booth at the Media Mart and there were limited stocks. If you wish to purchase the book, you may proceed to www.jadegroupasia.com
4. Salted Fish
Written by Yeo Wei Wei
Illustrated by Ye Shufang
Price at Media Mart: $15.50
Another story I chose for its local content. I had the same intention; to share the story to the future generation/s.
5. The World of Asian Stories (a teaching resource)
Written by Cathy Spagnoli
Illustrations by Uma Krishnaswamy
Price at Media Mart: $20
Being an educator and storyteller, I just had to have this. It has stories from all over Asia, with suggested activities as well. It even has a section on how to story tell. Wonderful resource book! I bought the book from the same distributor as My Mother's Sari; www.jadegroupasia.com
You could guess by now, I had a theme in mind when I bought the books. I was going for local or Asian stories. I believe that it is very important for the young generation to know about their heritage. Hence, my choice of purchasing such books. Stories always does the job of educating much easier, better and more effective. I am definitely contented with the books :)
