I had the honour of meeting a writer while I was at the Speak Good English Movement Carnival. This is a picture of Joshua Foo and his father. Besides being a writer, Joshua is an ex-gangster. Joshua writes about his past life as a gangster in his book titled, “The Right Mistakes: My life as a Singapore Gangster”. He hopes that others can learn from his mistakes through this book. Joshua started writing when his father challenged him to write an essay in his late-teens. Writing it was difficult in the beginning but Joshua wanted to prove his father wrong. Over time, that essay turned into a book. Other than writing, Joshua is a motivational speaker to teenagers and a part-time gym instructor. His is also working on his second book. He spoke for a programme at the Singapore Writers Festival on 26 October 2011. Sadly, I did not manage to attend any of the festival’s programmesL.
Joshua’s story does inspire me. I hope my writing will leave a positive impact on the community as well.
