SISF: Storytelling as a Culturally Resonant Counselling Technique

For this year's Singapore International Storytelling Festival, I only managed to attend the masterclass titled, "Touching Tales: Storytelling as a Culturally Resonant Conselling Technique" because 3rd and 4th September were Hari Raya weekends, dedicated to visiting relatives and loved ones. Even so, I still had a fruitful SISF. Allow me to start with a photo story.

The notes.

The setting.

The pair. Dr. Gideon Arulmani and Kamini Ramachandran.

Working together. Combining two worlds.

She's sooooo good.

He's truly passionate.

The master class enlightened my knowledge on stories and literature. It gave me a new pair of lens to wear whenever I look at stories. The way Dr. Arulmani looked at stories with his own lens made me feel moved to learn to look at stories from another perspective. The master class was not easy but it was not difficult. It challenged me. I am not a counselor, social worker, therapist or psychologist by profession; I only have basic knowledge on topics related to social science. There were certain terms that were more skewed towards the social sciences which took a bit more time to digest. Nonetheless, the idea of looking at stories through the lens of social science intrigued me. So far, I have only seen stories through the lens of language and literacy development, politics and entertainment. This definitely brings my knowledge in stories a step further. The activities I engaged in encouraged me to reflect on stories through my feelings, thoughts and actions. Dr. Arulmani did not provide textbook answers. He challenged the participants to think about their responses and thoughts. The master class was filled with some interesting debate and discussions. It was truly an enlightening session indeed.
